In the United States, students have to pay tuition to take college classes. There are programs to help students pay for college. This help is called financial aid. Some financial aid programs are from the government and others are private financial aid programs. You can receive loans, scholarships, or grants.
A loan is money given to you that you must pay back. You pay it back when you finish school.
Scholarships and grants are given to you for your hard work, good grades or other criteria. Scholarships and grants do not need to be paid back.
For some programs, you can get a tuition waiver. A tuition waiver means you do not have to pay tuition. Some pre-college programs, like English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), offer this.
