Libraries have a lot of books and other materials, like magazines, newspapers, and DVDs.  There are also computers and information online.  You can find information on many different subjects at the library.  Some of the library materials are fiction.  Fiction materials are stories that are made up and are not true.  The library also has materials called non-fiction (not fiction).  Non-fiction materials are about events that really happened.  Non-fiction materials have a lot of information to help us better understand our world and make better decisions.  A library may have materials in many different formats, such as:

  • books
  • documents
  • DVDs
  • experts
  • magazines
  • maps
  • newspapers
  • websites
  • databases

The library puts similar things together.  For example, all the books about mathematics are grouped together in one place, and all the books about citizenship are together in another place.

When you find an item in the library's online catalog, it will give you the call number.  The call number usually includes a number, all or part of the author's last name, and the year it was made.  It may also include the area in the library where you would find the item.

You also need to know the area of the library where the item is stored.  In some libraries, all the media materials (DVDs & CDs) are in one area, and the books are in another area.
