Doctor: Hello, David.  How are you?

Patient: I don’t have a lot of energy.  I’m tired a lot.  I am working my usual forty hours a week at the office.

Doctor: Are you getting enough sleep?

Patient: Yes, I’m sleeping seven or eight hours a night.

Doctor: And are you relaxing?

Patient: Yes, I spend time with my family on the weekends.  We usually barbecue with friends.

Doctor: Well, your blood pressure is really high, David.  It's 155 over 100.  I’m worried about that.

Patient: Really?  This is the first time I've had high blood pressure.

Doctor: Are you eating foods with a lot of salt, oil, and sugar?

Patient: Well, I do like my french fries and hamburgers and…  I drink three cans of soda every day.  But it’s diet soda.  I think that’s okay.

Doctor: No, diet soda is bad for you, too.  No more french fries or sodas.  They are filled with salt and sugar.  They are bad for your heart.  Eat fruit, vegetables, and nuts.  We get sugar from our fruits and salt from nuts.  We need only 1800-2300 calories a day.  Eat less food.  Eat only healthy food.  Let's look at your weight.  It's 245.  You are 5 foot 10.  A normal weight is about 175 pounds.  You are about seventy pounds overweight.

Patient: I know. I sit all day in front of a computer.

Doctor: You need to exercise more.  Walk or play a sport.  You need to exercise four times a week and eat healthy food every day.

Patient: Okay, Doctor, I’ll do that.  I’ll eat a healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and I'll exercise.

Doctor: Okay, we can see if the blood pressure goes down when you eat fruits and vegetables and chicken and fish. No sugar, sodas, french fries, or fried food.  Come back to see me in one month.  If it is not better, I will have to write you a prescription for blood pressure medication.
