Chapter Readings and PowerPoint Guidance
Some students will naturally know how to approach the textbook, articles, PowerPoint slides, or other course materials to glean the relevant information they need. Other students need support in knowing how to do that. The OEI Course Design Rubric (A9) recommends that students be given explicit contextual directions for how you want them using specific course materials.
To help guide students, you might consider providing them information on:
- Why you are providing this particular piece of content
- What general ideas or specific information students should gain from the content
- When students might be expected to use the content (ex. assignments, discussions, quizzes)
- How they might use this content in class or in their future
These contextual directions can be a brief 2 or 3 sentences (though they may be longer if needed).
One way to set this up is to create a Canvas page in each module that contains your contextual directions along with the links to the chapter sections you'll be using.
