Overview of Ch 6: Learning

Learning allows us to change our behavior in response to experiences. This chapter will introduce you to the most prevalent learning theories:

Classical conditioning, operant conditioning, observational learning and the role cognition plays in learning.

After reading this chapter you will be able to identify and apply learning processes to every day experiences. This chapter will also provide you with practical tools to effectively and systematically change behavior.

After successfully completing this learning module, students will be able to:

Define learning.

Identify Pavlov’s contribution to learning and describe principles of classical conditioning.

Define operant conditioning and explain the effect of reinforcers and punishers on behavior.

Distinguish between positive and negative reinforcement.

Explain the process of shaping.

Describe observational learning and how it influences behavior.

Explain how cognition influences learning.
