Overview of Ch 14: Stress & Health
This chapter examines stress and highlights our current understanding of the phenomenon, including its psychological and physiological natures, its causes and consequences, and the steps we can take to master stress rather than become its victim. By reading Ch 14, you will gain more understanding of scientific aspects of stress, including how we adapt and cope, which has been longstanding in psychology.
After successfully completing this learning module, students will be able to:
Define stress as a process and differentiate between stimulus-based and response-based definitions of stress and between good stress and bad stress.
Understand the physiological basis of stress and describe the general adaptation syndrome.
Describe different types of possible stressors including the importance of life changes as potential stressors
Understand the concepts of job strain and job burnout.
Explain the nature of psychophysiological disorders, including the functions of the immune system.
Describe how stress and emotional factors can lead to the development and exacerbation of cardiovascular disorders, asthma, and tension headaches.
