CLO Assessment
Why CLO Assessment?
How do you measure student achievement of your course learning outcomes?
TCC performs Course Learning Outcome (CLO) assessment through individual courses using student achievement results from the outcomes that are set for a course. These outcomes are approved by the Curriculum Committee and Instructional Council (IC). The Instructional Assessment Steering Committee (IASC) members assist in the process by providing options for professors to document their student achievement of particular CLO. Though the steps for Course Learning Outcomes (CLO) and Program Learning Outcomes (PLO) assessment are similar, the assessment levels, parts of the process and resources are different.
You are probably already doing assessment in some form or another - grading exams, writing feedback on papers, reading through discussion board posts. All you need to do now, is keep a record of it! There are lots of ways to do formal CLO Projects, you should work with your department/program chair, your IASC reps, and/or other faculty in your area to decide the best approach. You are in control! You get to choose!
Too much power and not enough direction you say? Well here are some examples of CLO assessment projects that you might undertake:
- Create a common assignment/project/test question(s) for all sections of the same course
- Use the Learning Management Grade Book inside Canvas to tag assignments with CLOs
- Create Rubrics for other assignments that assess student understanding of specific CLOs
You can find some examples of CLO projects, templates, tutorials on how to use the Learning Mastery Gradebook, and more in the Assessment Toolbox! And guess what?!?! You're already here! See below for the expected CLO assessment cycle at TCC:
