Become an AHIMA Member
Okay HIT students - it is now time to join your National Association. This program features several AHIMA-member only activities in order to complete some class projects/assignments. The cost for student membership is included in the textbook bundle through the TCC bookstore or $49 directly from AHIMA and lasts one calendar year from the date purchased. AHIMA members can get discounts on AHIMA-published textbooks, access to the Body of Knowledge (giant proprietary database with tons of HIM-related articles), apply for member-only scholarships (yes, TCC students have gotten them), etc. When you do get to graduation time, you'll save a ton on the RHIT certification exam versus non-members. Needless to say, it'll pay for itself in no time. :) Some of you may have purchased the textbook/membership bundle from the TCC bookstore. If you did, then you should have a redemption code of some kind to use when you sign up for your student membership. The directions for redeeming the bundle is at http://www.ahima.org/joinbundle.
For you non-bundle students, here are the directions for becoming a AHIMA student member:
- Go to www.ahima.org
- Click on Membership (top right)
- On the right side click on Join Online Now
- Scroll down to Student and click the Join Now button
- You will probably need to Create an AHIMA Account so fill in the information on the right side of the screen - when you are done click Create New.
- You can either pay by mail or directly online.
- TCC's EPC number is 412 to apply for the student membership
- Now you can join a local Component State Association (CSA) - please consider joining your immediate state. For Washingtonians, this would be the Washington CSA named the Washington State Health Information Management Association (WSHIMA). Their website is located at www.wshima.org. Remember that your CSA membership is FREE with a national AHIMA membership.
Congratulations! If you are going into a field other than HIM then use this week to check out your future membership requirements, volunteer opportunities, or whatever else you need to do to meet you future professional needs.
