Purpose
All HIM professionals will encounter a situation where additional research is necessary to handle a task correctly and ethically. Healthcare is too vast and changes to frequently to "know it all". As such, there are some wonderful tools from our trade association to help you quickly orient yourself to the subject matter and see recent developments.
This exercise will help you learn how to familiarize yourself with a few tools to include the:
- Journal of AHIMA: the official e-publication of the American Health Information Management Association—delivers best practices in health information management and keeps readers current on emerging issues that affect the accuracy, timeliness, privacy, and security of patient health information.
- Perspectives in Health Information Management: This is a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal that links practice, education, and research to improve health information management processes and outcomes.
- AHIMA Body of Knowledge (BoK): This archive contains an online library that places the breadth of health information management (HIM) knowledge through 2019 at your fingertips! Articles from the Journal of AHIMA, practice briefs, position statements, job descriptions, and more are located here. I want to reiterate that this is not a CURRENT resource but should be referenced to provide context and historical background on HIM-topics.
Instructions
This knowledge base contains many articles exclusive to AHIMA members (this is why we have you sign up). Once you are an AHIMA member, begin this assignment. You will want to begin by reviewing the information on their user guide first.
After that point, you may take this assignment up to 3 times. The highest score will be recorded in the gradebook.
