Purpose
Continuing on our journey of familiarizing ourselves with the medical record components, I want you to explore 4 paper-based records (see pdfs below) and answer a series of questions about them. Answering questions about data is called Data Abstraction. The role of a health information professional will sometimes require the collecting of key bits of information about a patient encounter to submit to the various regulatory agencies. This can range from submitting data into a registry (more on that in the next module), submitting it to a 3rd party to track patient outcomes or even determine if a diagnosis is new or ongoing, or creating a claim with the state because of a on-the-job injury.
The act of Data Analysis is the practice of working with data to glean useful information, which can then be used to make informed decisions. Every sector uses a variation of this tool to figure out trends or how to optimize their business processes. Healthcare is beginning to tap into the treasure trove of data being collected by the various IT systems/registries and are making incredible discoveries on a regular basis to drive better patient outcomes, streamline operations, and cut costs.
