What is this place and why should I check it out?
This Canvas shell originated as a session for the Faculty Retreat 2018. The theme of the retreat was Social Learning; this session focused on how Social Learning supported much of L. Dee Fink's theory and course design construct of Significant Learning.
The first module is where participants can interact and get more information about Fink's theory. Briefly, Significant Learning moves beyond both Bloom's Taxonomy of Thinking and the learning styles theories. Significant Learning is a holistic, rather than hierarchical, approach to course design that intends to build in personal significance wherever possible. This also extends beyond the use of UDL and mere engagement attempts.
The second and third modules are example lessons of course design for Significant Learning that I have used in Success in Online Learning (OLL 101) and Argument and Persuasion (ENGL& 102) respectively. The lessons are often "meta lessons" that support subject learning outcomes but which can be applied to many other disciplines. These examples are also specifically supportive of Social Learning. These courses were built using a "backward design" model, which Fink uses in his schema.
Please feel free to use or adapt anything here that you find useful. There are forums for interaction and which allow participant sharing. Let us know what YOU are doing that relates to Significant Learning.
